The artist Emily Xie firmly believes that the imagination of the audience is key to appreciating her work. She thinks that everyone’s different interpretations of her vibrant colors and unique patterns can add new charm to her abstract pieces.
In her NFT series 'Memories of the Qilin', inspired by East Asian art, Xie hopes that the audience can freely interpret her works. Some may see the figure of a dragon, others may feel the rhythm of waves, and some may discover traces of birds. For Xie, the purpose of artistic creation is not to limit the audience's understanding, but to inspire their imagination and let their thoughts soar freely.
Although each NFT series by Xie tells a unique story, they all share a common characteristic: inspiration from textiles, blending algorithmic aesthetics. This unique style provides the audience with a rich space for imagination, allowing everyone to find their own story clues within the works.
Xie's artistic journey is full of surprises and twists. She has had a strong interest in art since childhood, and this passion continued during her time at Harvard University, where she majored in Art History and Architectural History. However, after graduation, she chose to become a software engineer. As the daughter of Chinese American immigrants, Xie once found it hard to imagine herself becoming a full-time artist.
It wasn't until 2015 that a turning point emerged. Xie accidentally discovered a programming course on generative art on YouTube, which made her see the possibility of perfectly combining her two great passions—programming and art. This discovery not only opened a new chapter in her artistic journey but also pointed the way for her career.
Xie's experience showcases the power of cross-border integration. She successfully combined technology and art to create a unique visual experience, while also encouraging the audience to understand and appreciate art in their own way. Her story not only inspires those who wander in the fields of art and technology but also provides new possibilities for the future development of digital art.
